Moss Spells Out Contract Terms

Put aside all the front office talk and put aside all the agent speak. A source in Washington let VU listen in on a very intriguing interview with wide receiver Randy Moss that ran Tuesday on the John Thompson Show on SportsTalk 980 (WTEM) in Washington, D.C.

Randy Moss wasn’t at the Vikings’ voluntary minicamp today (neither was Cris Carter), but his words from an interview Friday with former Georgetown coach and current radio talk show host John Thompson made it to VU. Moss was in Washington, DC Friday playing basketball with Michael Jordan and others as part of his workout regimen. Moss promotes the Jordan line of clothing and has become friends with the man many consider the best in NBA history.

However, when Thompson caught up with Moss, it was all slam-dunk talk in a great interview that VU listened in on. The topics varied, but often came back to his contract status with the Vikings.

What does Moss want? If wasn’t his agent. It wasn’t the Vikings front office. Straight from Moss: Signing bonus of $18 to $20 million and an overall package of $100 million.

"I would love to play for the Minnesota Vikings. They have a great organization," Moss said, referring specifically to the coaching staff. But he also reiterated the words heard often in the last six months: "If not with the Vikings, then with someone else." That was his take on bringing a Super Bowl to Minnesota and that is his stance on his contract situation.

He repeated his desire to win, saying "it’s not about money," but when asked if he could have a cap-friendly contract that would allow his team to win, he told Thompson that all a team needs to do is sign him and put a few players around him and not worry about the offense after that.

Moss also said if he had a long-term contract he would feel more obligated to not play basketball. "It’s not my profession, but I just like playing basketball," he said, but did admit that getting to the NBA might be a goal of his.

In the free-flowing interview, Moss talked about his friendship with Cris Carter, saying he hoped to get Carter a Super Bowl ring before he retires after this season and that Carter taught him more about operating in the spotlight off the field than he learned on the field.

On Deion Sanders, who could be released from the Washington Redskins any day now: "Best cornerback out there." He said Deion is one of the only cornerbacks that doesn’t regularly need safety help, something Moss is accustomed to seeing in defenses that double-team him. Moss did admit that on occasion he sees the single team and simply gets too anxious, thereby getting illegal procedure calls against him.

Now the Vikings are just hoping that Moss doesn’t move too soon on them.
